Dear Church | Week 2: Smyrna | Faithful Through Suffering

What happens when following Jesus actually costs you something?

In Week 2 of Dear Church, we look at the letter written to the church in Smyrna—a church facing intense persecution, poverty, suffering, and even death because they refused to bow to anyone but Jesus.

And yet… Jesus had no correction for them.

Instead, He encouraged them to remain faithful no matter the cost.

In this message, discover:

Why suffering does not mean God has abandoned you

How the early church stayed faithful under pressure

What it means to live with urgency for the Gospel

Why this world is not our home

The eternal hope Jesus promises to those who endure faithfully

Key Truth:

Comfort can weaken our urgency.

The church in Smyrna understood something many of us forget:

This life is temporary, but eternity is forever.

While the world saw them as poor, weak, and suffering…

Jesus called them rich.

In this message, we ask challenging questions like:

👉 Is following Jesus simply convenient for me?

👉 Does my life reflect urgency for the Gospel?

👉 When I suffer or get wronged, does my response point people to Jesus?

This message also shares the powerful story of Polycarp, a pastor from Smyrna who refused to deny Jesus even when threatened with death. Because for the early church, Jesus wasn’t just worth attending church for—

He was worth giving everything for.

So what is our response?

➡️ Live with urgency

➡️ Remember this world is not your home

➡️ Stay faithful no matter the cost

Because Jesus never promised a life without suffering…

But He did promise eternal life, peace, and victory through Him.
